Issue
I followed a tutorial on Keycloak and Spring boot with the following configuration:
@KeycloakConfiguration
@EnableGlobalMethodSecurity(prePostEnabled = true)
public class KeycloakConfig extends KeycloakWebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {
@Autowired
public void configureGlobal(
AuthenticationManagerBuilder auth) throws Exception {
KeycloakAuthenticationProvider keycloakAuthenticationProvider
= keycloakAuthenticationProvider();
keycloakAuthenticationProvider.setGrantedAuthoritiesMapper(
new SimpleAuthorityMapper());
auth.authenticationProvider(keycloakAuthenticationProvider);
}
@Bean
public KeycloakSpringBootConfigResolver KeycloakConfigResolver() {
return new KeycloakSpringBootConfigResolver();
}
@Bean
@Override
protected SessionAuthenticationStrategy sessionAuthenticationStrategy() {
return new RegisterSessionAuthenticationStrategy(new SessionRegistryImpl());
}
@Override
protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
super.configure(http);
http.authorizeRequests()
.antMatchers("/visitor").hasRole("visitor")
.antMatchers("/admin").hasRole("admin")
.anyRequest()
.permitAll();
}
}
application.properties:
keycloak.realm=social-media
keycloak.resource=spring-boot-app
keycloak.auth-server-url=http://localhost:8180/auth
keycloak.ssl-required=external
keycloak.public-client=true
keycloak.principal-attribute=preferred_username
keycloak.use-resource-role-mappings=true
Spring Security and the keycloak spring boot starter are included in the pom.xml. When I run it, I get the following exception:
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'springSecurityFilterChain' defined in class path resource [org/springframework/security/config/annotation/web/configuration/WebSecurityConfiguration.class]: Bean instantiation via factory method failed; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.BeanInstantiationException: Failed to instantiate [javax.servlet.Filter]: Factory method 'springSecurityFilterChain' threw exception; nested exception is java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "java.lang.Integer.intValue()" because the return value of "org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.builders.FilterOrderRegistration.getOrder(java.lang.Class)" is null

I understand that the exception comes from the configure method - super.configure(http) and as KeycloakWebSecurityConfigurerAdapter extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter, I looked at the HttpSecurity methods, but I couldn't find out what the cause of the exception is. Any help would be appreciated!
Solution
this problem was introduced in version 5.5.0 from Spring Security. This is happening because KeyCloak adds two filters successively after another, like this:
@Override
protected void configure(HttpSecurity http) throws Exception {
http
...
.addFilterAfter(keycloakSecurityContextRequestFilter(), SecurityContextHolderAwareRequestFilter.class)
.addFilterAfter(keycloakAuthenticatedActionsRequestFilter(), KeycloakSecurityContextRequestFilter.class)
...
}
And there's a bug right now in which the custom filter order is not being persisted, thus resulting in a NullPointerException
when trying to add a filter relative to another custom filter recently added.
What I advise you to do right now is to use a lower version of Spring Boot, like 2.4.x
until the issue in GitHub gets resolved.
Edit: Upgrade Spring Security to 5.5.1 or higher fix the issue.
